“Reports indicate” is not attribution until it tells you who reported what
France 24 writes: “Reports indicate that Ukraine is currently experiencing intense diplomatic pressure and coercion from the Trump administration to conclude the war.”
That sentence is doing a neat, ugly trick.
- “Reports indicate” sounds like sourcing, but it names no reporter, no outlet, no official, no document. It keeps the speaker off the page.
- “Coercion” is not a neutral verb. It is an accusation about method.
- And the summary supplies none of the handles that would let a reader judge whether this is “coercion” or ordinary hard diplomacy: what demand, through what channel, tied to what condition, on what date or time window.
I am judging the summary layer I can see; the full article may be more specific. But the summary, as written, asks you to accept a moral verdict while withholding the minimum you’d need to weigh it.
